Introducing the UniWhalooor Loyalty NFT

UniWhales DAO
5 min readJul 6, 2022

On November 24th, 2020, UniWhales DAO was born. What started out as a tiny experiment around on-chain DEX analytics, has evolved into much more.

Our DAO members contribute to research, product development, and strategy.

They have supported the core team and helped us make valuable connections as we ship cutting edge real-time analytics for 11 different EVM chains and the NEAR protocol.

As of July 2022, we’re proud to have over 25,000 free users using our analytics tooling!

UniWhales DAO is a cohesive, collaborative group of some of the biggest DeFi and NFT native builders and investors.

We’ve been together for over 18 months and have one of the most loyal communities in all of Web3.

The UniWhalooor loyalty NFTs will strengthen the UniWhales community and provide a composable building block for on-chain reputations.

These are not static JPEGs, but link to upgradeable on-chain and off-chain metadata.

Above image corresponds to a Whale Tier member with 1 year duration + streak

The NFTs were programmed by Passage Protocol and designed by artist Artusmichal.eth.

The artwork is generative with three characteristics that update based on the wallet’s on-chain activity:

  1. Tier:

Pro — At least 5000 UWL
Whale — At least 16000 UWL
Alumni — had at least 5000 UWL in the past

2. Streak: consecutive time of current UniWhales DAO membership*

3. Duration: total time UniWhales DAO membership membership time

Some wallets may have left and rejoined the DAO, meaning their streak will have less days than their total duration.

Streak and duration will update based on the following milestones:
Starting tier, 69 days*, 6 months*, 1 year, 420 days*, 2 years, 4 years

*Streak only

The UWL DAO has only been around since late November 2020, at the time of writing meaning no loyalty NFTs are at the 2 or 4 year mark.

Long Term Web3 Community

We are proud of both our member retention and longevity:

As of July 5th, 2022, there are currently holder 378 wallets holding at least 5000 $UWL tokens.

346 wallets, or 91.5%, have held $UWL for at least 90 days.

316 wallets, over 84% have been members for at least 6 months.

Over 50%, 200 wallets, have been members for at least a year!

And finally the OGs, about 10% (36 wallets) have been here since the first month of UniWhales DAO, way back in 2020.

Eligibility

Any wallet that has at least 5000 UWL and any future wallet which has 5000 UWL (instructions to acquire 5000 UWL and join the DAO).

Transferability

Is the NFT transferable? Sort of. While it can technically be sent between wallets, the meta data resets, making them closer to the “Soulbound NFTs” Vitalik has been advocating for this year.

As we collectively build our on chain reputations we hope that other Web3 communities will target specific DAO members based not just on the # of tokens they hold, but longevity, loyalty, contributions, and the metrics that are most relevant to their specific goals.

Zac of Passage Protocol will elaborate on all the exciting things that can be done with UniWhalooor loyalty NFTs:

The Endless Possibilities of Upgradeable Metadata

Today, belonging to a Web3 community could mean many things, but at its core a membership is a framework that defines what it means to belong to a specific community.

Integral to the concept of an on-chain or Web3 membership is the asset — or interoperation of assets — that represent the relationship between member and project.

The UniWhales Loyalty NFT is an interplay between provenance, holdership (quantity of tokens held in wallet), and higher order calculations like tenure (both global and local).

These data and metadata sets are then mapped in real time against an incentive framework (in this case, tiers that have increasing value to the member) and visually updated according to a member’s progress as a UWL holder.

UniWhales DAO members can now see the progress they are making with regard to one asset (the UWL token) on another asset (the membership NFT card).

There is unbound potential when it comes to creating a Web3 membership program, particularly one that is upgradeable and dynamic. The combinatorics of any membership program begin with *what* data you are using:

  • On-chain badges and signifying tokens (think: Sourcecred grain, POAPs, Coordinape tokens, and other PFPs) can be read permissionlessly in most cases today.
  • Off-chain and hybrid markers and data points (e.g., voting history via Snapshot, membership rules and calculations like UWL tiers, Discord or even Dapp engagement).
  • Higher order calculations, e.g. instead of a simple ‘count’, a project can use appearance on holdership leaderboards, or holdership streaks within a certain tier of membership).

For projects that are experimenting with incentive and membership programming, it’s important to consider privacy, security, and the balance between trustlessness and transparency.

Once you have the triggers set, there are an infinite number of ways to render dynamic updates on a membership NFT:

  • Direct: When a change occurs, display that change visually on the NFT (e.g., I earn a point, my points balance updates on the front of the card).
  • Abstract: When a change occurs, display that change through a representation (e.g., shifting tiers).
  • Temporal: Integrate a time component to higher-order calculations (e.g., streak, tenure, leaderboards) to drive engagement with episodic updates & rewards.
  • Non-visual. Consider other meta-data updates (e.g., access rights, music) as a way to incorporate more dimensionality to your program.

Of course, when it comes to loyalty programming in Web3 or membership NFTs, we’ve only begun to scratch the surface of what’s possible.

For UniWhales, this is a meaningful first step in an exciting program of future innovations.

Building blocks for a Decentralized Society

We are still learning how to best utilize the loyalty NFTs and still have many things to figure out.

But we have confidence in the unknown. Specifically, innovations from the Web3 world that we will integrate with the UniWhalooor NFT moving forward.

Thanks for reading, and if you haven’t already we encourage you to join our DAO.
